Seeing Red - How Philly Took the ChipDime has been following this year’s edition of the Burger Kings Kings of the Courts 3-on-3 Tournament since July ‘06, which culminated in the national championship round in Las Vegas during NBA All-Star Weekend. And since we were there from jump, we can say that it was only right that “Hard 2 Guard” took home the $20,000 grand prize, and especially for unofficial captain Tyrone “Red” Hill.
Red, a native of Darby, Pa., near Philadelphia who’s headed to Cheyney University on scholarship this year, went through five cities on the BK tournament tour trying to punch his ticket to Vegas. He started off in Philly, then went to Baltimore, D.C., Charlotte, and finally Birmingham with an assortment of different teammates. In Birmingham it was Red and...

Catching up With D-BlockWhen the BK Kings of the Courts tournament came through Baltimore, it was apparent from jump that the “Birdmen” would be a problem for the rest of the field. Jamaal Booker, Melvin Perry, Kyle Johnson (all 6-8, 325 pounds of him) and Derrick Lamb not only had arguably the most talented squad, they had a chemistry of a group that you could tell had spent a ton of time ballin’ on the blacktop together. At the end of the day, it was indeed the Birdmen holding the big checks and rocking the BK crowns, booking their tickets for Las Vegas for the national championship. While Booker took the Player of the Week recognition for his title-game scoring display, Lamb was close. He could best be...

“Count It” edges out “MGP Ballers” in Houston’s Game of the WeekEven though it was “only” a quarterfinal game, it was as intense and hotly-contested as any championship game we’ve seen so far on the 14-city BK Kings of the Courts tour. And while neither “Count It” or “MGP Ballers” advanced to the finals in Houston, they still turned in the best game of the day.
On the surface, Count It possessed the tools necessary to dominate this game. The squad boasted big men Roy Wills (6-9) and Carlos Wheeler (6-8), while MGP’s guard-heavy roster had only 6-6 “Tee Black” as a viable option inside.
While Wills and Wheeler did their thing in the paint, MGP stayed in the game behind the scoring of guard D.J. Harris. With his slick handles and deadly mid-range jumper, Harris repeatedly torched...

"Most Hated" wins Houston chip, final piece of BK puzzleThe national championship field is complete. Team “Most Hated” took the BK Kings of the Courts 3-on-3 Tournament chip at the tour’s final stop in MacGregor Park in Houston, Texas. While we had been seeing a recent trend out-of-town teams winning BK tourney stops, the four born-and-raised Texans of Most Hated – Chris “Preach” Destin, Randolph “Reece” Elder, Damian Henderson and Kenny Williams – will represent H-town in Las Vegas next February.
The turnout in Houston was one of the biggest the BK tourney has seen this year, with close to 50 teams vying for a shot at $2,000 and a trip to Vegas.
Most Hated came into the championship game somewhat of an underdog against “NWA,” made up of Tracy Dones, Tim Moore, Dwayne “The Legend”...

The Player of the WeekJo Jo Martin of “The Ham” is hands down our MVP pick of this last weekend's Burger King Kings of Courts tourney in the Big Easy. The 6-4 Martin owned the paint on offense and defense throughout The Ham's run, scoring points and playing tenacious D all day. Birmingham, Alabama, born and bred, Jo Jo was a consistent vocal and physical presence for The Ham; his teammates could bank on him for big-time dunks, soul crushing blocks and total command of the glass each and every game.
In the finals, The Ham faced the “New Orleans Ballers” of West Bank Parrish, the squad who emerged from the loser's bracket. Martin set the tone from the jump, scoring early and often, and The Ham never looked...

After the StormWhen Katrina ravaged New Orleans a little over a year ago, the photos and video coming out of the Gulf Coast was unbelievable. How would the region rebuild? A few months later, when New Orleans was announced as a stop on the Burger King 3-on-3 tour, no one knew what to expect. With basketball parks in the 9th Ward being virtually washed away, where were the ballers? As it turns out, some New Orleans residents have been waiting for events like the tour to start feeling a sense of normalcy again.
New Orleans native Michael Spencer of West Bank Jefferson Parish says that the tournament came at a good time since the city is in the middle of rebuilding.
“It’s all comin’ back together - especially when...
